It’s officially award show season, and we’ve loved seeing what celebrities have worn on the red carpet at the Golden Globes and the SAG Awards, and we can’t wait to see what people turn up in at the Grammys this weekend or the Oscars on March 4. The big takeaway from the shows so far is that anything goes.

Many ladies wore black to the Golden Globes, but still there was so much variation in fabric and style, from long dresses to short and plenty of jumpsuits and suits too. At the SAG Awards, stars wore bright colors, pale shades, floral prints, sequins, white and black, and their dresses were long, short and every length in between. We also saw a lot of suiting and a few dress-trousers combinations.

The good news is that these days, ladies, you can wear just about whatever you want to a formal affair, expressing your personality with your sartorial selection. If the invite says black tie, a floor-length gown is usually expected, although you may be able to get away with a shorter fancy cocktail dress. Think about the location and the host and imagine what he or she envisions for the party. But we say if you have the opportunity to wear a floor-length dress, why not go for it?
