Guys, sure you look cool in your PT01 trousers, but feeling cool is just as important—especially when the temperature rises. One simple solution is to don a pair of shorts. But before you show a little leg, there are a few important things to consider. Here’s what to know:

Get the proper length

A couple of inches above the knee are all you need, and the cut is the most flattering. If you want to cover up a little more, find a pair that touches the top of the knee—wearing shorts that hit below that joint is a fashion faux pas.

Hide the pockets

Unless you’re on a safari or working a construction site, leave cargo and utility shorts and others with bulky pockets at home. The shorts you wear to social events should always have clean lines.

Colors and patterns

Mix and match solid colors with your polos and tees—tan, khaki, white, navy and olive are traditional hues, but light blue, bright green and red will make any outfit stand out.
