The Meghan Markle Effect

The Meghan Markle Effect

Now that Prince Harry has become engaged to Suits actress Meghan Markle, royal watchers can’t wait to see what fashion brands Markle wears and the power she will yield to sell out clothing the way that Kate Middleton has done since the run up to her wedding to Prince William back in 2011.

“The fact that she’s American makes a lot of difference,” said Fflur Roberts, head of luxury at Euromonitor, a market research firm. “It’s going to open many more doors to brands in the US. The whole world will be following what she’s wearing and will want to have those products.”

Take for instance, the black Hunter books that Markle was seen wearing last February. The number of searches for those boots increased globally by 18 percent after Markle wore them. In the US, that number rose to 30 percent, according to fashion search engine Lyst. And Markle was just Harry’s girlfriend at the time.

Some experts predict that Markle will have an even greater effect on fashion sales than Kate Middleton because Markle is a relatable American girl from Los Angles who graduated from Northwestern University, whereas Middleton, being from a wealthy British family, is seen as slightly more out of reach.

At GARMANY, we’ll be watching Markle too, knowing that this American addition to the British royal family is bound to be a trendsetter.
