Belstaff at Garmany
Founded 1924 · Staffordshire, England
A Century of Adventure
In 1924, Eli Belovitch and his son-in-law Harry Grosberg opened a small workshop in Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, with a single idea: build outerwear tough enough for the motorcyclists, aviators, and workers who needed real protection against the English weather. They named the company Belstaff — a portmanteau of Belovitch and Staffordshire — and became the first brand to adopt waxed cotton for consumer apparel. By treating plain-weave cotton canvas with a proprietary blend of waxes, they created a fabric that was windproof, water-resistant, breathable, and virtually indestructible. It was practical genius, and it changed outerwear forever.
The decades that followed read like an adventure novel. In 1933, Belstaff debuted at the Isle of Man TT races. During World War II, the brand switched to military production, manufacturing smocks and aviator coats for the British Army and Royal Navy. In 1948 came the Trialmaster — designed for the Scottish Six Days Trial, the world's oldest off-road motorcycle endurance event — and with it, the jacket that would define the brand for a century. Steve McQueen wore a Trialmaster in The Great Escape. Che Guevara wore one across Latin America. Amy Johnson wore Belstaff when she became the first woman to fly solo from England to Australia in 1930. Every jacket that leaves the house carries that lineage — a hundred years of proving that style and function were never opposites.
Signature Pieces
The Icons
The Trialmaster
Since 1948
The most storied jacket in Belstaff's history. Designed for the Scottish Six Days Trial: 6 oz. waxed cotton, four bellows pockets (one slanted for map access), belted waist, corduroy-lined collar, pre-curved sleeves, and pivot armholes for freedom of movement. Steve McQueen's jacket. Still in production, unchanged in its essentials. The original adventure jacket.
The Roadmaster
Since 1981
The Trialmaster's more refined sibling. Same four-pocket design and 6 oz. waxed cotton, but with a closer, more streamlined fit built for lifestyle as much as the road. Two-way zip with snap-close storm flap, buckle belt, brass hardware, and the signature check lining. The jacket that brought Belstaff from motorcycles to the street.
The Brooklands
Named for the World's First Motor Circuit
Belstaff's most overtly motorsport-inflected design. Heavier 8 oz. British Millerain Ultracore waxed cotton, nylon reinforcement at elbows and shoulders, active ventilation, quilted shoulders, and a short-cut racer waist. Named after the Brooklands Motor Circuit in Surrey — the world's first purpose-built racing track, opened 1907.
Beyond the Jacket
The Collection
Waxed Cotton Outerwear
The heart of Belstaff. Trialmaster, Roadmaster, Brooklands, and seasonal styles in 6 oz. and 8 oz. waxed cotton — windproof, water-resistant, and built to develop a patina that only improves with age. Re-waxable for a lifetime of wear.
Leather Jackets
Hand-waxed goatskin and calfskin in classic motorcycle silhouettes. The leather Trialmaster is the pinnacle — crafted in Italy with the same pocket layout and proportions as the waxed cotton original, finished with a deliberately aged hand-waxed treatment.
Knitwear & Layers
Heavyweight crew necks, quarter-zips, and layering pieces designed to sit under a Belstaff jacket. The same utilitarian sensibility applied to merino, cashmere, and cotton knits — substantial, unfussy, built to last.
Trousers & Boots
Cargo trousers, technical chinos, and Goodyear-welted boots that complete the Belstaff wardrobe. The boots — Copeland, Campbell, Munro — are now designed and produced entirely in-house.
The Material
What Is Waxed Cotton?
Waxed cotton begins as a tightly woven 2-ply cotton canvas, then is impregnated with a proprietary blend of micro and technical waxes to create a wind- and water-resistant barrier that remains breathable. Unlike synthetic coatings, waxed cotton never cracks or peels. It develops a patina with age — every scratch, crease, and fade tells the story of where the jacket has been. It can be re-waxed at home to restore waterproofing, making it a jacket for decades, not seasons. Belstaff sources its standard cloth from British mills, including Millerain in Lancashire — a specialist that has produced waxed fabric for over 150 years.
"A legend of craftsmanship and adventurous spirit."
