Where It Began

A Story of
Courage

In 1964, Johnell Garmany's father, Larry, fled Cuba with some family, escaping by fishing boat under the threat of violence, risking everything for the chance at a new life.

By the early 1970s, Larry had opened his first store in New York, introducing European fashion long before it was widely embraced in the U.S. His eye for style was ahead of its time, but what set him apart was something else entirely: he made people feel taken care of.

In 1989, he brought that vision to Red Bank, New Jersey, then a struggling town few retailers believed in. For the first 13 days, the store didn't make a single sale. He stayed anyway. Because Larry believed that if you offer something exceptional, and treat people like they matter, the business will follow.

That belief didn't just build a store. It helped shape what Red Bank would eventually become.

When Larry passed in 2015, the responsibility of carrying that vision forward fell to his son, Johnell Garmany. Not as a reinvention. As a continuation, one that carried weight.

"It was never about replacing my father," Johnell has shared. "It was about honoring what he built, and making sure it continues to grow the right way."

Johnell moved from the creative and buying side of the business into full leadership, carrying not only a brand, but a legacy rooted in family, trust, and community. He didn't come in to change everything. He came in to decide what should never change, and where evolution mattered.

In a retail world that rewards speed, scale, and constant expansion, he made a different choice: refinement over replication. He focused on deepening the experience, not diluting it.

Johnell remains deeply hands-on: traveling to Italy to source collections and build relationships, working directly with clients on wardrobe and fit, and continuously refining the in-store experience.
