Jonathan Simkhai was buying for a boutique at 14, promoted to merchandiser before he could drive. After studying at Parsons and FIT and working in his family’s fashion manufacturing company, he debuted his first collection in Fall/Winter 2010. The origin story has a charming simplicity: so many friends kept leaving his apartment wearing pieces from his own closet that he decided to formalize it into a brand. Intermix and Barneys New York picked up the first collection immediately.
Three years in, Simkhai discovered something that added an unexpected layer to his work: his grandfather had operated a lace mill in Iran in the 1970s. He incorporated lace as a signature fabrication, and the material became a through-line in his collections. In 2015, the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund win — one of American fashion’s most competitive prizes — transformed the brand from a rising name into a globally recognized label. Today, working from Los Angeles, Simkhai draws his design language from architecture and sculpture: progressive construction techniques merged with intimate hand-detailing, creating garments for women who live “artful, unapologetic lifestyles.” Michelle Obama, Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Blake Lively, and Amal Clooney have all worn the label.
