In 1991, Nicky Zimmermann began designing garments from her parents’ garage in Sydney, selling them at the Paddington Markets. She’d just completed design school in East Sydney, and the market stalls became her laboratory — a place to refine her aesthetic and observe firsthand how women responded to her work. When two pages of editorial appeared in Australian Vogue, boutique orders followed from across Australia. Her sister Simone joined to handle the business side, and together they built what would become Australia’s first billion-dollar fashion brand.
What set Zimmermann apart was a willingness to fuse two worlds no one else was combining: ready-to-wear and swimwear. The sisters pioneered resort fashion as a category — pieces that moved from the beach to the restaurant without a wardrobe change. Intricate floral prints, ruffled detailing, strategic cutouts, and flowing silhouettes became the brand’s vocabulary. In 2014, Kate Middleton wore a white lace Zimmermann dress during her Australian tour, creating waiting lists that stretched for months. By 2022 the label debuted at Paris Fashion Week.
