Serving Up Thanksgiving Style

Serving Up Thanksgiving Style

Halfway between Halloween candy and the full-blown assault of December celebrations, Thanksgiving can feel like just another to-do on your holiday calendar. It’s a chance to gather with family, enjoy turkey and mashed potatoes, watch some football and be reminded of all the reasons why you don’t gather more often.

With all the food and football going on, it’s easy to get a little too comfortable and casual for the feast. While it is a good idea to dress comfortably—that third serving of pie isn’t going to make room for itself—that doesn’t mean you can’t look great too. Putting effort into looking your best helps make the day more festive and celebratory as well as sends a sign of respect to your nearest and dearest.

The goal here is to look great while staying relaxed. Layers are key to take you comfortably from the crisp fall air into the kitchen where the oven has been cranked up since 4 a.m. Let’s start with outerwear. A camel peacoat instead of the typical navy strikes the right balance of formal and casual. When your coat comes off, a thick-knit, shawl-neck cardigan will add depth and texture to your look, while a flannel base layer looks sharp without being stuffy. Go for jeans with a generous amount of stretch so you won’t feel constricted after the first course.

Finish off the outfit with interesting details: a smart bracelet, a sharp watch, bold green boots and a braided elastic belt to make room for dessert.
