You can’t put a price on love. Just ask Fido. Last year, we spent almost $70 billion on our pets, nearly 70 percent more than in 2007, according to the American Pet Product Association (APPA). In fact, nearly 40 percent of us take our pups on vacation, nearly double the number who did that a decade ago. Even more interesting is that one in six pet owners have created a social media account for their animal family members, posting various celebrations and shenanigans.
Of course, the reason we do all this is that we get something—a lot—out of it. Science has proven that dogs have the power to make us feel better. When you pet him or her, your body produces oxytocin and endorphins, hormones that lift both your mood and your emotional bonds.
