Social media app skyrocketing in popularity

Your phone is probably already cluttered with apps, some of which you use more often than others, but do you have room on your home screen for just one more? TikTok, the social media site that closely resembles defunct Vine and allows users to create, edit and share short video clips, is furiously gaining popularity.

So, what is it? TikToK is a Chinese short-form video app where users, primarily of the millennial variety, can share 15-second snippets of themselves doing literally anything, from cooking to dancing to walking their dogs to shopping at Garmany! Like many of its competitors, clips can be filtered, sped up, slowed down, or enhanced with audio or music, and users can “like” other TikTok videos and amass followers.

Though TikTok has been around since 2016, it’s been gaining followers recently in the United States. In October 2018, TikTok was downloaded more than Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram and YouTube, according to Apptopia, an intelligence firm that tracks mobile apps. It’s also been downloaded about 80 million times in the United States, and nearly 800 million times worldwide. Even celebrities like Jimmy Fallon and Tony Hawk are aboard the TikTok train, so you know they’re onto something.

Download the app at the appstore for iPhone or Android for free to find out for yourself what the fuss is about. And since TikTok is all about what happens in everyday life, film yourself shopping at Garmany and share the video for all your new social media friends to see, because why not?
